QUIZ QUESTIONS
Beverly Daniel Tatum in
Why are all the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? asks several questions.
Answer them for yourself and explain as requested below. These are short answer questions. Please write up to 3 or 4 sentences for each response.
1. Tatum writes, "Many of us grew up in neighborhoods where we had limited opportunities to interact with people from different from our own families" (p.84). Did you grow up in neighborhoods where most of the people were from the same racial group as your own? If so, how might lack of racial diversity lead to misinformation about people who are racially different from you? If you have grown up in neighborhoods that are racially diverse, what have you learned first-hand about how race can impact experiences differently?
2. Tatum asserts “All that is required to maintain it [systemic racism] is to go about business as usual” (p. 91). She ponders how we can move more people to be anti-racist. What do you think is necessary to move people to be more anti-racist? If you have participated in anti-racism learning or actions, include those examples in your answer.
3. Tatum shares the story of a student who said he did not think he would do anything to interrupt a system that was working in his favor. To this she questions, why people who are advantaged by a system want to end those advantages. “What are the costs of that system to them?” (p.93). How is being anti-racist counterintuitive for people who benefit from the status quo?
